Ok folks, this is my first update in a long time, but it's got some pretty scary stuff. First off, here is an excerpt of a conversation between the House minority leader and our president. This is positively frightening:

Nancy Pelosi: "The first thing to do to fix this mess (in New Orleans) is to fire Michael Brown, head of FEMA."
George Bush: "Why would I do that?"
Nancy Pelosi: "Because of all that went wrong, with all that didn't go right last week."
George Bush: "What didn't go right?"

If the people in power are not going to adequately address disasters, or even acknowledge them, something must be done. Please contribute to the Red Cross at http://www.redcross.org. I know we are all struggling college students with no money, but even one dollar can make a difference. We should feel obligated to help, especially when those whose job it is to help fail miserably.

Can our government take a hint?
    By Marianela Jimenez, Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) Costa Rica's Constitutional Court has ruled that the country's name cannot be included by the United States as part of a ''coalition'' in the Iraq conflict, and Costa Rican officials are demanding their country be stricken from the list.

Costa Rica apparently never formally joined the U.S.-led coalition, but its name was listed on a White House Web page of coalition members, sparking outrage in a country where the Iraq war is enormously unpopular.

Following Wednesday's ruling, Costa Rica which never sent any troops to Iraq, in part because it has no army is making it clear it does not want to be listed as a member of the coalition.

A White House Web site still had the country listed on Thursday. The U.S. Embassy said it was still reviewing the court's action and had no immediate comment.

Foreign Minister Roberto Tovar said his government planned to send a letter to the U.S. government later Thursday asking that Costa Rica be removed from the so-called ''coalition of the willing.''

''As fellow democracies, which we are, they will understand that we are respectful of judicial decisions,'' he said.

The seven-justice court ruled that the inclusion of Costa Rica violated the country's constitution. The ruling came on a motion by Attorney General Farid Beirute, who argued the constitution bars support for military action that is not authorized by the United Nations. He also said the list violates the country's pacifist constitutional principles.

Controversy over the issue erupted when local newspapers noted that the White House had listed Costa Rica as a member of the coalition ''that has already begun military operations to disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction.''

Tovar and President Abel Pacheco acknowledged signing a statement of support for the United States on March 19, 2003, that is quoted on the White House Web site, but they insisted it was support merely for the fight against terrorism not for an invasion of Iraq, as the U.S. statement implied.

    Only 4 1/2 games back...
While I realize we will probably not win the division, it's still nice to smell it every once in a while.

    OY!!!
Well, I believe I have discovered my least favorite form of weight loss: sitting in a car for 5 hours in blistering heat with no air conditioning. I managed to experience this driving from Hartford to NYC yesterday en route to a wedding. Upon arrival, I looked like a dog emerging from a pool. Anyhow, this was the first Jewish wedding I've ever been to (hence the title of this entry) and let me tell you they know how to party. I'm not necessarily one for religion, but dancing in circles for hours with an entourage of bearded men dressed in black is almost worth it. During the reception a few of us serenaded the crowd with our guitaring.

Instead of merely driving back to Hartford after the wedding, I offered to drive Scott back to UMass since he had to be there at 8 am for band stuff. So we departed from Staten Island at 12:30 am, and after traveling over 400 miles and being out $50 on gas, tolls, pastries (from a place I dropped into to grab a fresh cinnamon roll at 5 am) and assorted caffeinated beverages, I arrived at Trinity at 6:30 just in time to get an hour of sleep before more RA training.

On a more angry note, did anybody see the interview on Fox with a "major Kerry supporter?" This woman, Carrie, was a porn star from California who said she supports Kerry because she likes the slogan "Carrie for Kerry." Her major political platform had something to do with having all natural breasts. The Fox people were like, "these are the type of people that want John Kerry elected." GRRRRRRR!
